Description

So this was something i had an idea to do a few days ago...actually i wanted to do an illustration after i finished reading Ascendancy of the Last a few months back but never got to it until now. The illustration is of a drow transformed back into a dark elf....the original ancestors of drow before they were cast down into the underdark eons before. apparently they had dark brown skin and black hair....i could totally geek out on this but i'm going to spare myself and all of you. the illustration is a sort of an accompaniment to the last chapter of the book, but not really, more of my own take on a single moment in time, not necessarily a direct depiction of a scene from the book.
If you haven't read the series and enjoy reading about drow i strongly encourage Lady Penitent. but before you read those, you need to read the War of the Spider Queen series as that prequels all the events in these books...yah i know, a LOT of reading. I've sadly read them all and it was quite enjoyable :)

>>SPOILER ALERT!
Excerpted from Lisa Smedman's Ascendancy of the Last--from the Lady Penitent series.

"...Alas!" Lashrael cried, his cheeks awash with tears. "Eilistraee is no more. She was slain--cut down, together with the high priestess, by the treacherous Lady Penitent."
Cavatina's soul trembled. "No!" she gasped.
"All part of the plan, " Felarathael said calmly. "There is no further need for Eilistraee. The willing were saved, the unwilling cast down. It is time for the dark elves to return to Arvandor."

Beautiful drawing, but those angels are spewing so much BS, tho. Eilistraee has never cared about transforming the drow appearance. She has never cared, talked, or done anything about that in like 20+ years of existing in the Realms (and 10k years since the drow were cursed in-world), except, all of sudden, in that novel. On the contrary, in her story Eilistraee has acted by even taking the curse on herself, so that she could be one of the drow, and help them embrace life anew *as drow* (i.e. what they were born as, what they are). This was never what she meant for redemption--it is all about choice and the drow rediscovering the beauty that they were denied--what but then, LP had a lot of issues when it came to lore-accuracy, and was the product of editorial mandate to remove the drow gods (and it shows), so...

In any case, only a few hundreds of Eilistree's followers have been transformed into drow, which is a really small number compared to the thousands of followers that she--as a lesser power--has. They had nearly no impact on Faerun. Eilistraee has now returned to life (according to Ed Greenwood, she even actually survived with the help of Mystra) as a drow goddess herself, her followers are mostly drow (as of the 1490s DR), and she's currently focused on helping them rebuild realtionships with the humans of Waterdeep (she's getting a new temple there). No interest whatsoever in transforming other drow, which makes sense, since Eilistraee has never cared about that. IMO, the ritual was mostly that mage's work (at some point Eilistraee even withdrew her guidance).
